If the wall is repaired the new plaster or paint conceals hidden casts below the surface as the ‘memory gaps’ are filled-in by the organising structure of the new wall. Now the site becomes archaeological in as much as the layers below need to be excavated. In Ricoeur’s use of documented traces he points to Freud’s use of clues in his psychoanalytic work (Ricoeur 2006: 173), and his archaeological metaphor of excavation.
