institutional traits

   series 1
In series 1 of Institutional Traits, low quality digital images from employee photo identity cards are scanned, enlarged and re-presented as a series of portraits that reveal continuous interaction with the security system of the workplace. As the photo card is swiped, the image is increasingly erased.

   series 2
Series 2 of Institutional Traits (2012) comprises two large digital photographs of the former Exeter College of Art and Design’s abandoned lecture theatre, installed in the same lecture theatre. The site had been closed in 2007 when the Art College was relocated to Plymouth University’s main campus as the Faculty of Art. All the AV equipment had been removed, and so it remained with its 76 seats empty and unused until demolition in March 2014.

The two photographs were taken from opposing front corners in 2012 using the extant lighting to create semi-theatrical effects. When the photographs were installed in the empty lecture theatre in March 2012 as part of a project 'Revisions and Propositions', tours of the building were conducted for former staff and students who spontaneously contributed their own recollections to the tour’s narration.
